We're Going to Remodel Our House

Pearlin and I will be remodeling our house in 2008. Woohoo! We plan to do a full scale remodel by gutting the interior, building out, building up, and even down. The end result should be a brand new (technically a remodel for tax purposes) two-story house with a basement. I'm estimating 2800 total square feet, but I won't really know until the plans are drawn and we evaluate what we can afford. For the past month, we've been evaluating some potential design/build firms and are about to finalize our decision.

If our goals are realized, we'll have 3 bedrooms and 2 baths upstairs, 1 bedroom/study and 1 bath downstairs, and a nice first floor layout suitable for entertaining guests.

To save money, we're planning on building an unfinished basement with plumbing for a future bathroom and no interior walls. It'll be a gigantic room with inexpensive carpet, some heating, and some lighting. Most importantly (and most excellently), we plan to put a pool table in the basement!!!!! I'll be sure to make the lighting adequate for the pool table, and we might even consider adding a ping pong table. You can do a lot when you have a basement that is 38' wide (max width of the house) and at least 20' long (we'll make this as long as we can afford). Tentatively, I think we'll be able to afford about 800 square feet of basement, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of 1000 sq ft. This is all possible because we're not paying to finish the basement, which can easily cost an additional $100+/sq ft. When we have more money in the future, we'll finish the basement properly, adding walls, a bathroom, etc.

In addition, we plan to purchase an upright piano for the new house. Both of us really like to play piano, but for the past too many years, I haven't lived with a piano, and have been forced to play piano only during visits to our parents' homes.

We're hoping for construction to begin as early as March 2008. If it all works out, our home will be ready by early 2009!
