Search Engine Gripe

I've decided that "math software" and "educational math software" are very important queries that I wish to target in terms of search engine optimization. Unfortunately, in order to target those keywords, I have a problem. If you search for "math software" on Google, you'll notice that the top pages that show up on the top of the list are websites that have the words "math" and "software" appear at least 50 different times. These tend to be directories that contain math software links. In fairness, I suppose these links aren't irrelevant, but to make MathScore show up in the top ten list, I'm going to have to make a web page that has the word "math" and "software" a zillion times! This is absurd, but I might resort to doing this. In sharp contrast, type "math software" into msn search and I show up as the 3rd result. MSN is more influenced by the quality of the keywords and not the quantity, so it appears that for my purposes, no single page can cater equally well to both search engines. So although I'm ecstatic to be placed so highly on MSN search, it doesn't matter much because MSN doesn't get much traffic relative to Google. It appears that Yahoo behaves like Google in this regard, so sticking "math software" phrases throughout one of my pages is going to be unfortunately very necessary. In the search engine world, people talk a lot about Google Page Rank and getting websites to link to your own, but I've come to the conclusion that old-fashioned search engine optimization techniques might be the way to go...
